CHEMISTRY, PRE -ALGEBRA & CONSUMER MATH

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR

LISA CATO


After 19 years as a Chemical Engineer, Lisa left the work force in 2010 to homeschool her three girls. She is still homeschooling her third daughter in 7th grade. She remains active in her Classical Conversations community in Simpsonville. Lisa also works as an assistant/bookkeeper for a local architect, enjoys gardening and reading in her free time, and pulls for her Clemson Tigers with her husband and her oldest daughter who's a junior at Clemson. She is coming to terms with pulling for the Carolina Gamecocks next year with her middle daughter who is starting there in the fall.




CHEMISTRY


Target Level:  Ages 15 - 18

24 Weeks


This class will provide the student with a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general chemistry. Lab experiments will be conducted that expand on the chemistry concepts.

Chapters are assigned for at-home reading and completion of problems. Parents are expected to work with their student at home to help him/her understand the material and complete the problems. Class time includes lecture time for each module, reviewing chemistry concepts, working through problems, and answering questions from the reading.

Lab Reports and On-Your-Own problems from the text as well as tests will be completed at home.


Syllabus will be handed out on the first day of class.

This course can be counted as Honors if if all of the material in the book is completed and mastered, and lab reports are completed. The number of lab reports is decided by the parent. 


Textbook: Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 3rd ed. text (in class)
Apologia Exploring Creation with Chemistry Student Notebook (suggested)
Tests and Solutions (parent use)


Prerequisite: Algebra 1 (if student is strong in math, Algebra 1 can be taken in conjunction with the class)

PRE - ALGEBRA

Target Levels: Ages 12 - 14

24  Weeks


This is math for the 8th grade student taught as preparation for Algebra 1.  A strong 7th grader may take this course upon teacher recommendation.

CONSUMER MATH

Consumer Math is a practical, real-world course designed to equip students with the everyday math skills needed for life beyond the classroom. Every student is strongly encouraged to take this course, as it provides essential tools for navigating real-life responsibilities with confidence and wisdom.

Students will learn how to manage money wisely, make informed financial decisions, and understand the math behind daily living. Topics will include budgeting, banking, saving, and spending, as well as understanding taxes, interest rates, loans, and credit. Students will also explore comparison shopping, discounts, unit pricing, and basic business math.

Through real-life scenarios and hands-on activities, students will gain confidence in handling personal finances and develop skills that will serve them well into adulthood.
