LISA CATO

After 19 years as a Chemical Engineer, Lisa left the work force in 2010 to homeschool her three girls. She is still homeschooling her third daughter in 7th grade. She remains active in her Classical Conversations community in Simpsonville. Lisa also works as an assistant/bookkeeper for a local architect, enjoys gardening and reading in her free time, and pulls for her Clemson Tigers with her husband and her oldest daughter who's a junior at Clemson. She is coming to terms with pulling for the Carolina Gamecocks next year with her middle daughter who is starting there in the fall.

This class will provide the student with a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general chemistry. Lab experiments will be conducted that expand on the chemistry concepts.

Chapters are assigned for at-home reading and completion of problems. Parents are expected to work with their student at home to help him/her understand the material and complete the problems. Class time includes lecture time for each module, reviewing chemistry concepts, working through problems, and answering questions from the reading.

Lab Reports and On-Your-Own problems from the text as well as tests will be completed at home.

Syllabus will be handed out on the first day of class.

This course can be counted as Honors if if all of the material in the book is completed and mastered, and lab reports are completed. The number of lab reports is decided by the parent.

Pre-Algebra is designed to prepare students for success in Algebra I by building a solid foundation in mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and algebraic thinking. Using the Denison Math Pre-Algebra curriculum, students will develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through clear instruction, guided practice, and real-world application.

Topics include integers, fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, percentages, exponents, square roots, expressions, equations, inequalities, geometry, graphing, probability, statistics, and an introduction to functions and algebraic concepts.

Denison Math emphasizes mastery over memorization, encouraging students to understand the "why" behind mathematics while developing critical thinking skills and confidence. Weekly instruction, class discussions, and guided examples will reinforce concepts, while homework completed at home provides additional practice and prepares students for quizzes and tests.

This course is ideal for students who have successfully completed upper elementary mathematics and are ready to transition into higher-level math. Upon successful completion, students will be well prepared for Algebra I.
