INTRO TO COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

The “Introduction to Computer Technology” course will help your student demonstrate computer

literacy with a general understanding of computer hardware and software. We will also be

introducing common applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, image

editing and building a web page. Hands-on activities will reinforce the students' understanding

and practical use of the material.


Category: Computer Science 1 Unit

Prerequisites: Windows or Mac OS laptop required for Hands-on activities. Minimal computer usage skills (e.g., keyboarding, mouse, basic operating system usage).


Course Overview:

This overview details the high-level scope of information and skills to be taught in this course.

The information in this course will generally be taught following the sequence below but may be

subject to change. This curriculum is modeled after the South Carolina Department of

Education’s 2018 Computer Science Standards for High School. This Scope and Sequence

document will continue to be updated as new standards are published by SCDE.


Scope and Sequence

The following key concepts will be taught:

● Computing Systems

● Networks and the Internet

● Data and Analysis

● Algorithms and Programming

● Impact of Computing

After completing this course a successful student should gain the following knowledge and

skills:

● Computing Systems

○ Be familiar with computing hardware and software and how it contributes to

everyday problem solving;

○ Understand basic troubleshooting and error analysis.

● Networks and Internet

○ Learn how data is transmitted across networks and the Internet;

○ Comprehend common cybersecurity threats and security theory.

● Data and Analysis

○ Be able to describe various data collection, storage and representation

techniques;

○ Understand how to model sets of data for real-world problems;

○ Be able to design and represent data with application tools.

● Algorithms and Programming

○ Analyze a problem or idea and design a software solution;

○ Be able to trace and understand the flow of execution of a program;

○ Apply the divide-and-conquer and reuse techniques when designing solutions;

○ Be introduced to the software development life cycle and why it is important;

○ Model and properly apply real-world data to language data types.

● Impact of Computing

○ Be able to discuss the impact of computer systems from a global perspective;

○ Understand evolving legal and ethical tradeoffs;

○ Learn about major contributors in the technology field;

○ Be familiar with the history and changes in society brought about by technology.



Teacher: Ben Menking

Ben has over twenty years experience with computer systems and software development. He is

employed by World News Group as a Systems Architect and has a bachelor’s degree in

Computer Science from Bob Jones University. Ben has prior teaching experience training new

software engineers and he taught Physical Science in a co-op class setting.
