RE-IMAGINE THREADS
Target Levels: Ages 13 - 18
8 weeks
Learn a few simple skills to refresh and personalize clothing & accessories you own or have thrifted.
Discover how to refresh your wardrobe with creativity in this hands-on class focused on reimagining and repairing clothing and accessories you already own or discover through thrifting. You’ll learn practical, beginner-friendly skills like sewing on buttons and patches, mending tears, hemming, and adding creative details through decorative stitching and appliqué. Whether you want to repair well-loved pieces or transform them into something uniquely your own, this class will help you build confidence, give new life to items that are damaged, and express your personal style through simple, creative techniques.
Each 75-minute class will focus on a clothing repair or sewing skill and then apply it to a garment or accessory. Learn how to sew on buttons and decorative patches, hem, mend tears, reverse applique designs, and reimagine & sew two garments into one. Appropriate for teen girls and guys!
Most skills will involve hand sewing. A couple of classes will utilize sewing machines--students will be taught on class machines, although they may bring their own machine if they choose to.
The teacher will provide all sewing materials and some pre-owned garments to practice on.
For most satisfying results, students should bring in some garments of their own for the weekly applied skill work. These are the kinds of pieces to find for class in your closets or thrift store: jeans or jacket or satchel to add patches or interesting stitching to, a skirt or pants that need hemmed, a shirt or jeans with a stain or hole to cover with creative applique/patch, something missing a button, something with a rip or opening to mend, two shirts to combine into one (such as 2 flannels or button-ups--look for cotton fabric, not silky material or stretchy knit). More specifics will be given in class.
**This class will NOT delve into alterations other than hemming, so be sure the clothes are already a good fit.
Tuition: $175.00 Supplies are included.
